Highlights

A highlight is a passage you marked in the web reader or on your e-reader. It stores the passage and its position in the book. To write about a highlight, use a note.

  • In the web reader, select a passage and highlight it.
  • On your e-reader, the KOReader plugin uploads your highlights. Syncing a book again does not create duplicates.

If you delete a highlight on the e-reader, Crossbill keeps it and marks it Deleted on the e-reader. It no longer syncs to your devices. If you delete it in Crossbill, it is removed from Crossbill and all devices.

If you highlight the same passage again on the e-reader, Crossbill restores the old highlight with its tags. It also restores flashcards and bookmarks if you deleted the highlight on the e-reader. Deleting a highlight in Crossbill deletes its flashcards and bookmarks for good.

Open a book and go to its Highlights tab. Highlights are grouped by chapter in reading order. The chapter list shows how many highlights each chapter has.

You can:

  • Search the book’s highlights by text.
  • Sort them newest or oldest first.
  • Filter by one tag and one highlight label at a time. Click a chip again to clear the filter.
  • On a phone, use the filter button at the bottom of the screen to reach chapters, tags and bookmarks.

Click a highlight to open it. In the highlight dialog you can:

  • go to the previous or next highlight
  • copy its text or a link to it
  • add tags
  • delete it
  • see its linked notes and flashcards

The search on this tab matches words. To search all your books by meaning, use semantic search in the app bar.

A highlight style is the colour and drawing style you used on the device. A label is the name you give a style, such as “Key idea” for yellow.

Click the coloured dot on a highlight to name its style and choose the colour Crossbill shows it in. A highlight has at most one label, which comes from its style. You can set labels for one book or for all books.

Labels work differently from tags. You add tags yourself, and a highlight can have many of them.

You can bookmark a highlight from its dialog. Bookmarks have their own list, ordered by page, so you can quickly return to passages you use often. Bookmarks do not affect reading progress.
